I love eating at a chain just as much as the next girl. Who doesn’t love breadsticks from Olive Garden? But there comes a time when you do have to shed the comforts of Chili’s and Applebee’s and adventure out into the world- and that my friends is what I am here to help you with. I have compiled a list of my favorite off the grid restaurants in Stockton for every occasion.

PAPAPAVLO’S BISTRO AND BAR
501 N Lincoln Ctr
Stockton, CA 95207

10 minutes from campus

You just finished cleaning your dorm for the first time all semester when your parents call to say they’re in the parking lot. The clear choice here is to head straight to Lincoln Center’s Papapavlo’s Bistro and Bar. Open for lunch and dinner, this Mediterranean style restaurant is sure to please the pickiest palates as they offer entrees ranging from gyros and steak to chicken and pasta dishes. It’s on the nicer side, but nothing you can’t wear a t-shirt to.

AMERICA WAFFLES
1540 E March Ln  Ste 5
Stockton, CA 95210

9 minutes from campus

Had a long night studying? Roll out of bed and on over to America Waffles (messy bun optional). When faced with the difficult decision of hash browns or country potatoes go for the country. I highly recommend the omelets and the chocolate chip waffle. This spot is not as well-known as other breakfast spots like Duck Nook, but it’s one of my favorites.

YEN DU RESTAURANT

702 Porter Ave Ste E
Stockton, CA 95207

9 minutes from campus

Yen Du is perfect for when you have a big group looking to go out, even if it’s short notice. I recommend calling ahead to see if you can get one of the booths off to the side for a little more privacy, but seating isn’t usually a huge problem. Family style restaurants are a great way to keep costs down, which is why I recommend one of the pre-selected Yen Du dinner options for 2, 4, 6 etc. people. That my friends is what you should order. Oh, and go for the House Chicken.

VIVA BURRITO MEXICAN FOOD

1130 E March Ln
Stockton, CA 95210

8 minutes from campus

I’m thoroughly upset I did not find this place until my senior year. Life changing I tell you. By far my favorite burrito place to date. Did I mention it’s drive thru? LIFE CHANGING, PEOPLE. Go for a Super Burrito with whatever meat your little heart desires. The nachos and tacos are also highly recommended. Also, they’re open until midnight. You’re welcome.

PODESTO’S MARKET AND DELI

104 Lincoln Ctr
Stockton, CA 95207

10 minutes from campus

Podesto’s is hands down has the best subs. I’m a huge fan of the Dutch Crunch bread but every once in a while, I mix it up and go for the Genova Soft.  The tri-tip and sausage sandwiches they grill out front are also really popular. I’ve talked to alumni from back in the day who used to go here- definitely a Pacific tradition.
